Mauby Bark is made from the bark of the mauby tree. Also known as mavi in Puerto Rico, mabi in Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. It is made with sugar and the bark of certain species of the mauby tree. Mauby is an herb that is species of a small tree native to the northern Caribbean Islands and in the Bahamas.
In Barbados, Mauby is usually bought as syrup and water added to make the drink but many still make it themselves at home the old-fashioned way from the original bark. It resembles root beer in taste with a bitter after taste.
The Health Benefits Associated with this drink are that it is good for arthritis, reduces cholesterol, treats diarrhea, and helps fight diabetes by lowering insulin levels, according to studies carried out at various universities.
Overall 264 out of 622 patients or 42% reported Mauby as bush medicine. Among bush medicine users (58%) reported taking bush medicines for diabetes. The association of bush medicine use for diabetes is significant. The use of herbal remedies from medicinal plants (bush medicines) was studied in 622 people with diabetes. These were people who were attending 17 government health centers on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. In this study, bush medicines were used by 42% of patients. Insulin-treated patients were less frequent users of bush medicines.
It is concluded that bush medicines are taken regularly by many patients with diabetes in Trinidad and it is more effective for them than those who take insulin. Mauby was frequently used as remedies for diabetes.
INGREDIENTS:
- 12 cups water
- 4 mauby bark sticks
- 1 piece aniseed
- 2 cinnamon stick
- 3 cups sugar
- 1 cup lime juice (optional)
- 1 to 3 tablespoons Angostura Bitters
- Ice (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAUBY CONCENTRATE:
- Wash Mauby Bark. Add mauby, cinnamon, and aniseed to pot. Add water to the pot about 1 inch above the level of mauby bark. Then bring the water to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Leave it to sit for 3 hours or overnight. Cool, strain, and pour the mixture into an airtight bottle.
